As you have probably noticed, the site is currently undergoing some changes. Our main software has been growing a bit creaky and is in need of some care. Just like the Burrow, our building blocks are a little off kilter so please bear with us whilst we bring the site back into working order.

Whilst we are working on recapturing our beautiful dragon and that signature MNFF look, we hope you enjoy this new responsive design that should be accessible on any platform or medium.

If you discover any bugs in the code, please do let us know on our forums, over on our Facebook page, or by contacting our coder on twitter @RoxyBlackMNFF

And don't forget our Beta Boards can be found, as always, just here.

The Nineteen Years Later Ficathon

by the opaleye @ 07/02/17 4:43
The Nineteen Years Later Ficathon

1st September 2017 marks the date of the epilogue - the epilogue - as in Nineteen Years Later.

2017 also marks the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’s publication in the UK, and the 10th anniversary for the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

As such, we’ve got a ficathon to celebrate all three of these remarkable and exciting dates. You can write a fic, drabble or poem. For drabbles under 500 words, post them on the beta boards here. For fics and poems, post them on the archive and link to them in the comments below or on the beta boards.

The Line-Up

“Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year.”

“All was well.”

These two iconic lines are the first and last of the epilogue and the last of the epic series overall. Use either of these lines (or both) to open or end your fic.

Your fic can be related to the epilogue, or be completely separate! The choice is yours.

The Other Next Generation

We’ve seen many iterations of the epilogue in fanfic over the past ten years since it was first published.

Take another wizarding family who is farewelling a child on Platform 9 and ¾ on September 1st 2017, and write about them. They could be completely new Original Charaters, or it could be a minor character with their own Next Generation family whom we don’t often see in fanfic.

An Alternate Nineteen Years Later

The Cursed Child plays around with time, which invariably creates several different versions of Nineteen Years Later.

Alter your own canon timeline - what would Nineteen Years Later look like if something in the original series hadn’t happened.

What if Sirius never died? What if Voldemort won? What if Harry and Hermione ended up together?

Write a fic about what Ninenteen Years Later - September 1st 2017 - would look like in that alternate universe.

26th June, 1997

That’s the date when Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in the United Kingdom.

Write a fic about that day in the Potterverse. Voldemort’s second reign of terror was about to begin, Draco had his 17th birthday a little earlier in the month, Dudley also turned 17, Harry learned that Snape overheard Trelawney’s original prophecy, Harry and Dumbledore retrieved the Horcrux locket and Dumbledore was eventually killed.

A lot happened in June 1997 - let’s explore it.

Leaving Hogwarts

“Leaving Hogwarts” by John Williams is the track used for the epilogue scene in the Deathly Hallows film. It was also the ending to the final scene in the first film - how apt!

Listen to this track from the film score and use it as your inspiration for a fic. You can find the music on Youtube, Spotify and iTunes.

2017 Quicksilver Quill Awards! Nominations open!

2017 Quicksilver Quill Awards! Nominations open!

Yes, that’s right, everyone’s favourite MNFF award ceremony has rolled around once again. Since 2006, the Quicksilver Quills have celebrated the best writing MNFF has to offer, last year giving thirteen writing awards across six categories. Each year, stories are nominated and judged by our members. Some of MNFF’s finest readers and writers assess each nomination and decide upon the winners.

Over the last few years, changes were implemented in order to streamline the judging process. However, this year, instead of removing a category, we’re actually adding one - Best New Canon. This is to recognise all the amazing new stories our authors have been writing inspired by the additional material from Pottermore, Fantastic Beasts and The Cursed Child.

Categories

+ Best General Story (contains best General, Mystery, History, Marauder Era, Humor, and Alternate Universe fics)
+ Best Dark/Angsty Story
+ Best Canon Romance Story (contains the SSP of Dumbledore/Grindelwald)
+ Best Non-Canon Romance Story (contains all other SSPs)
+ Best Poetry
+ Best Post-Hogwarts/Next Generation Story
+ Best New Canon

Nomination threads open today and will close at the end of the day on 30th June 2017, at which point there will be a one week break in order to assign judges to each category. Judging will begin in mid July. Anyone is welcome to submit a nomination either via the forums, as a comment here on the archives or via the MNFF tumblr. We are looking to find the absolute best stories from the last twelve months. They should be well-written, have engaging plots and characters, and be a good representation of the category for which they are nominated (though they don’t necessarily have to have been submitted to the corresponding archive category). In short, they should be the stories that make you go WOW.

The rules are similar to previous years but please refresh yourself with them anyway to make sure you nominate the right stories in the right categories.

Rules

+ Only stories published or updated since the 1st June 2016 are eligible to be nominated.
+ Stories do not have to be in the corresponding archive category to be nominated. For example, a story may be in a romance category but if you think it is particularly funny, it can be nominated in humour.
+ An author or story can win more than one award in the same year. We reserve the right to place a cap on the number of awards given to any one author/story at a later date.
+ An author is eligible to win in a category they have been either winner or runner up in before.
+ Winning stories from previous years may not be nominated again in any category.
+ Do not second nominations “ seconding clutters up threads and gives an unrealistic indication of how many stories have been nominated. Having more than one nomination does not increase a story’s chances of winning.
+ Any author can be nominated, including moderators.
+ There is no limit to the number of fics you can nominate.
+ The judging committees reserve the right not to present an award in any categories where they do not feel the standard of nominations is high enough. However this will only be done as a last resort.
+ Please use the form provided in the first post of each nomination thread and ensure you provide a working link. Nominations that do not follow the correct format will be removed.

Judging

As with the past few years, a thread has been opened on the forums for members to volunteer to be judges. Judging can be demanding but also fun, and we really value the input of as many members as possible in the judging process. You can find more information on judging in the sign-up thread. We do require that one be a member of the forums in order to judge, as judging takes place within the forums.
